Wo Fat – Midnight Cometh

It is not often that I listen to an album that leaves my jaw on the floor for the duration of said album. Perhaps I'm a little jaded, or maybe it's that between my radio show and these reviews, I literally hear hundreds of releases every year. Recording technology is so prevalent and so inexpensive that pretty much anyone or any band can record and release their music, and no offense, but the very vast majority of it is generic and mediocre.

When I dropped the needle on this new release from Wo Fat, not only did my jaw hit the floor, but my ears rejoiced and that deep, reptilian part of my brain was dancing in ecstasy. As a fan of heavy music, I was familiar with the previous releases from this band, but this, this is Wo Fat on a completely different level. This is not just one step up. This album has me wondering if perhaps aliens came to visit the band and gave them a DNA injection of galactic level heaviness.

If, by chance, you are not familiar with this band, the best way I can describe them is a heavy rock band that can groove and get a little funky, and can seem to bend time and space with their rhythmic alchemy. They very often are lumped into the stoner rock genre, and I can see how that happens, but they are so much more that. To do so is not fair to them. There are elements of doom and classic rock in what they do. And did I mention that they are heavy?

I listened to album opener, “There's Something Sinister In The Wind”, and for the first couple of minutes, it seemed like a straight ahead rocker. Then without warning, all of these rhythmic twists and turns started happening and the song morphed first in one direction, and then into something completely different. Yet with every change the band was right there, together, blowing my mind. It is an astonishing track to listen to; you really need to do it. My words are never going to do it justice.

“Of Smoke And Fog” is another stunner. Perhaps it doesn't quite hit Hendrixian levels, but the opening minutes definitely have a Trower-esque feeling, that is, until the heaviness slowly sneaks in the absolutely levels everything in its path. And then melding back into the vibe of the opening minutes.

I mentioned alchemy in an earlier paragraph, and that is truly what this band does on this album. They take the basic elements of guitar, bass and drums, and create something that simply has to be heard. The creativity and flexibility of this band on this album are like an entirely new element, something that is rarely achieved in the oversaturated world of music these days. I mentioned just a couple of tracks, but every one of the six songs on this album deserve to be heard over and over again. There aren't too many albums these days that need to be heard, but this is definitely one of them. This is well and truly an album of the year candidate. If this is what midnight sounds like, I hope we can freeze time so that it is always that time of night.

Elevators To The Grateful Sky premiere new song 'Mountain Ship' with Music & Riots | New album Cape Yawn released on 11th March

In what will be the second full-length album for the Palermo, Italy-based band, Cape Yawn marks a dramatic shift in both gear and sound for the heavy psych rockers who first came to light with the release of their self-titled debut EP in 2011.

Formed by friends Sandro Di Girolamo (Ex-Undead Creep) and Giuseppe Ferrara – both of whom cut their teeth as the brutal (and now defunct) death metal set Omega – Elevators To The Grateful Sky pull together and package a diverse range of influences from each band member’s distinct experience. Joined by Bonham-worshipping drummer Giulio Scavuzzo and guitarist Giorgio Trombino the band is a pressure cooker filled to the brim with psychedelic metal, doom, classic and groove-laden rock.

Serving their early days in their native Palermo, it didn’t take long for their EP to find its way onto the desk of Swedish label Transubstans Records who jumped at the chance to release their debut album Cloud Eye in 2013. An out-and-out foray into the darkened days of early grunge and straight up heavy 70s rock and roll, fast forward to Cape Yawn and the band has developed even further. Complimenting and drawing on influences as diverse as Danzig, Fu Manchu and legendary alt rockers Morphine (the song ‘Laura’ on Cape Yawn is dedicated to the band’s lead singer Mark Sandman) to galvanize their songwriting talents, Elevators To The Grateful Sky produce something entirely of their own making. It’s an album that will keep audiences guessing and leave no lover of rock and roll wanting.

Cape Yawn by Elevators To The Grateful Sky will be released on 11th March 2016 on HeviSike Records. Stream and share new song ‘Mountain Ship' with Music & Riots here - http://musicandriots.com/premiere-elevators-to-the-grateful-skys-new-song-mountain-ship/

Clutch - Psychic Warfare

*All names have been changed to protect the innocent*

Feuds.  Large or small, feuds begin for all kinds of reasons.  This article is about a feud that began not that long ago in Richmond, Virginia.  What makes this particular feud unique is that it involves the supernatural.  Yes, this is the sordid tale of two psychics at war.

It goes without saying that this situation could have been easily avoided.  A small amount of market research on the part of Mr. Zoltan before moving to Richmond would have been all that was necessary to understand the local economy he would soon be joining.  Unfortunately he decided to set up shop and market his psychic abilities only three city blocks away from the well-established psychic storefront of Mr. Cayce.  This decision understandably upset Mr. Cayce, but only after Mr. Zoltan stole away members of Mr. Cayce's clientele did the feud begin.

One morning Mr. Zoltan arrived at work to find spirit catchers hung all across the outside of his shop.  Of course, being a psychic, he did not require any assistance finding the vandal.  In retaliation he broke into Mr. Cayce's place of business, replacing his tarot cards with an obscene novelty deck and substituting a scuffed bowling ball in place of his crystal orb.  Infuriated, Mr. Cayce decided to call in the big guns.  He escorted several well known local priests to Mr. Zoltan's place of business where they performed an overt, public exorcism of the building.

Events escalated quickly after that.  Both psychics used telekinesis against one another, Mr. Cayce moving Mr. Zoltan's keys and belongings while Mr. Zoltan repeatedly turned the sign in Mr. Cayce's window to read "closed".  False readings were awarded freely to rival family members leading many to lose copious amounts of money on lotteries and pyramid schemes.  Marriages and long term romantic relationships ended abruptly based off of malicious advice.  School was abandoned.  Careers were thrown away.  It was madness!  Sheer madness!

After months of near-constant psychic sabotage the two rivals coexist in an uneasy truce.  Neither is willing to take direct action against the other, yet they are both plotting their next masterstroke behind closed doors.  The citizens of Richmond, alive and dead, can only wait and hope for a peaceful resolution to this ruinous feud.  Alas, resolution appears to be nowhere in sight.

Waveriders!  Brothers and sisters!  With these next sentences I speak not to you the converted, but to new initiates of the house of Clutch.  Yes!  Although it is difficult to fathom there remain in this world people who have yet to be exposed to the legendary exploits of our beloved rock 'n' roll institution.  Therefore my friends I ask that you understand when towards you I offer only a knowing wink and a nod, and instead focus my attention on drawing others into the warm, welcoming embrace of Psychic Warfare.  We'll fist bump later.

So you've never listened to a Clutch album?  Well hey, that's alright.  You're here now and that's what's important!  Let me give you some background.  Clutch has been around since 1991.  They have released eleven studio albums, a handful of EPs, several live albums, and two compilation records.  I'm telling you this not to make you feel shame or embarrassment, but instead to prepare you for the veritable gold mine you're about to discover.  This musical vein runs ridiculously deep!

What does Clutch sound like?  Good question.  The band's music has evolved over the years but I like to describe their sound as 70s-inspired hard rock/heavy metal.  What sets them apart from countless other bands that fall into that category?  Two things.  Incredible songs with unbelievably memorable riffs and grooves deeper than the Mariana Trench, and one of the best vocalists in rock 'n' roll.  With every bellow of his thunderous voice Neil Fallon adds an immense amount of power and conviction to these already potent compositions.

Psychic Warfare, the band's latest release, is the perfect place to get your feet wet and begin your new obsession.  The album is composed of a murderer's row of ten unrepentantly wicked songs.  Isolated for analysis there is not a less-than-compelling track in the bunch.  When joined together as intended however, they create a 40 minute block of pure, undiluted righteousness!  All the right boxes are checked on the answer sheet.  The riffs.  Oh lord, the riffs!  The tight musical interplay.  The fantastical lyrics.  The gargantuan choruses.  It's all there waiting for you to press play.

Waveriders, here's the simple truth.  Psychic Warfare is an absolute monster.  Pick up a copy of this album at your earliest convenience if you enjoy premium-grade rock 'n' roll.  Better yet, buy multiple copies!  You'll need them because once this album reaches your playback system of choice it's going to be impossible to remove.

MaidaVale – Dirty War (Live At Studio Underjord)

When singer Matilda Roth entered the stage at the Wizard Of Fuzz festival back in October last year she was like a hurricane perfectly channeling the spirit of Janis Joplin and moving like Iggy Pop at the same time. I was not prepared at all. Her voice pierced through the screaming guitars handled by Sofia Ström and the thunder of the rhythm section fronted by bassist Linn Johannesson and Johanna Hanssons drums and hit me like lightning. MaidaVale is a true trip on stage.  It was one of the best live performances of 2015 in my book and I have been waiting for some news about a full length album. And now things are happening. May 13th sees the release of “Tales of the Wicked West” (The Sign Records) on cd and vinyl (which I pre-ordered immediately).

The press release states:

“Tales of the Wicked West is MaidaVale’s debut album. The four-piece with influences ranging over decades have created a sound based in the late 60’s/early 70’s music scene. With a modern take on blues rock the band have captured many audiences with their heavy and psychedelic vibes. A rock solid rhythm section provides lots of space for the blues influenced guitar. Adding Matilda Roth’s powerful, charismatic vocals and the lyrical themes, political both on a personal level and world-devouring, makes Tales of the Wicked West an album that stands out from recordings made in this time and age.”

Until then we can enjoy “Dirty War” recorded live at Studio Underjord which is like a barrel of gun powder put on a cart an rolled onto the scene of retro rock. It’s funky and groovy like the year is 1968 but ends up in a crescendo that is as angry as any Rage Against The Machine song you ever heard. But with soul.  A strange but wonderful brew.

Bandcamp Bonanza – 1st Quarter 2016

I say it every year which is, “I say it every year but this year is shaping up to be even better than last year” in music terms of course, and 2016 continues the trend. 2015 was an outstanding year for music and whether it’s the bands themselves being exposed to so much good rock the inspiration is creating a level of competence not seen in recent times, or the fact that the music is just so accessible that the critics and fans are able to weed through the garbage at a high pace and make the decisions themselves as to what is good and what is not, it’s hard to tell. One thing for sure is that rock is not dead. In fact it may be just the beginning of another era of music not heard since the 60’s and 70’s. Here are some highlights I snagged on bandcamp thus far this year. More to come in future edition of the Bandcamp Bonanza

Wheel in the Sky – Heading for the Night

Wheel in the Sky hit me like a ton of bricks on one Saturday morning earlier this year and ordering the vinyl via The Sign Records bandcamp page ended up being the first thing I did after pouring a cup of coffee. I must have played the album 5 times in a row throughout the day, and play it regularly months later which, oddly enough, is rare in this day and age. The fact that they are from Stockholm, Sweden brings no surprise that they rock with a heavy groove-laden retro approach. This particular album had a little something extra that made it stand out in the crowd of the new wave of retro heavy rock n roll. A very beefy 70’s progressive rock feel, well written melodies with a racy vocal tone and sick ass guitar dueling.

“Heading for the Night' is heading towards one of my favorite Bandcamp discoveries in some time. Unrelenting 70's proto riffs, 80's inspired tonality, with modern Swedish grooves. At times I hear shades of The Who while others I'm just astonished with the superb execution each and every song exhibits. This is amazing! Vinyl worthy, vinyl ordered.”

Youngblood Supercult – High Plains

Youngblood Supercult was another band that blindsided me out of nowhere. I got a promo copy prior to release and sat on it for a while for whatever reason but when I hit play I realized I had made a rookie mistake of judging the band name before hearing the music. In fact after hearing how great the album was the band name sank in and became a rather cool band name. Anyway, these guys and gal rock hard and with conviction. They have a previous output with a different lead singer that rips as well, but High Plains definitely comes out as an improvement. Be on the lookout for Youngblood Supercult. Here is what I said for them on bandcamp and published in the March Edition of the Doom Charts

“Topeka Kansas 4-piece Youngblood Supercult morph the heavy blues-based, hard-driving classic rock sound of the debut album ‘Season of the Witch’ into a highly intoxicating bend on stoner rock, laced with occult vibes and dripping with super fuzz. ‘High Plains’ summons a mid-western folklore essence forged of heavy groove, dusty riffs and mind bending atmosphere. The psych factor blends its swirling doom soaked rhythm with a sandstone polished vocal tone slugged out by new singer David Merrill. Rumors of a European vinyl pressing later this year are circulating with hopes of getting label support in the USA for a local distribution deal. I’ll tell you this, working with Ripple Music, my ears have been glued to Youngblood Supercult since catching wind of High Plains. Take note of these guys and gal, they have something going on for sure.

The Trikes – aLive EP

This is phenomenal! Hard riffing grooves with the kind of RAWK we are always talking about. All around impressive EP promising a bright future. Listen for yourself, can't afford not to.”

EPs and demos have become more and more my thing, as much as they make me crave more, and it’s enjoyable to see the potential early on and watch bands gain popularity. Call it hipster, call it whatever you want, but there is something super fun about being in on a band before everyone else. The Trikes out of Germany, may have a large following in their native land, and for all I know I am not in front of anyone else? The point being is The Trikes have demonstrated an extremely promising output on their 5-song EP and I urge all of you to take heed and pick up the digital EP for FREE on bandcamp and tell your friends. I’ve warned you, now I expect to see your face below the album on bandcamp.

Imperial Jade – Please Welcome Imperial Jade

Okay so number 4 on today’s list is another band from outside the USA. That’s 3 for 4, this one straight out of Spain.  I ordered the CD of this album, which I normally do not order if a vinyl is offered and/or if the digital is notably lower in price as I don’t typically listen to CDs when the digital is obviously included with bandcamp. However, when I purchased the vinyl was the same price and I paid only for the shipping in addition. Looks like they jacked the price since then, but in their case the music demands attention and fits the rare case of justifying a higher price. Good old fashion rock n roll here folks. The CD is pretty cool. Actually brought it on a road trip to the Borderland Fuzz Fiesta to listen to with Ripple’s own “Racer” back in February.

Straight up southern fried stoner rawk straight out of the 70's. This covers the hard rock map presenting a triumphantly modern execution of retro blues, commercial rock, and psychedelic groove. For fans of Zeppelin, Small Stone Records, Def Leppard or the thought of a Van Halen meets the Allman Brothers or Lynyrd Skynyrd collaboration! Favorite track: Fire Burning Sound.

Skulldron – Through the Smoke

Skulldron was recommended to me by Wayne Rudell of Fuzz Evil and Powered Wig Machine late last year in a discussion about music and the upcoming Borderland Fuzz Fiesta he was hosting in Tuscon, AZ at the end of February, 2016. They were on the 2015 bill and came with high praise. After one listen I was sold, literally ordered the CD and sealed the digital in my collection to cherish until the internet crashes and burns. I’d like to stress that I listen to dozens of album every day at times and they don’t all sell me on first listen or at all for that matter. Through the Smoke kick off with a hard rock tune showing bits of metal, stoner, blues, and aggressive biker clad rock n roll which throttles on for the duration of the album. In fact, it gets better as it purrs along. Bits of Sabbath worship, elements of Motorhead, with some guitar mastery of the likes of Black Label Society spew out the speakers like foam at a kegger. All those comparisons seem legit all wrapped up into its own southwestern plume of riffs that’s hard not to fall in love with. Outlaw stoner rawk to the max!

“Something about the heavy grooves stirring up dust in the Southwest lately that puts an extra layer of stubble under that beard you never knew you had. Skulldron takes you on a riff ride through the smoke and over the dunes screaming down the desert highway with a skull smashing blend of biker metal, stoner riffs and high octane solos!”

Crazy Bull - The Modern Handbook of Rock Vol. 1

Crazy Bull are another band with only a demo and a string of singles available both on cassette tape and 7-inch vinyl. Ya, you guessed it, I bought them all. Their latest, The Modern Handbook of Rock Vol. 1 insinuates there is more to come and I hope to god there is. Within the handbook we hear the latest progression of an early sounding heavy proto metal with a grizzled vocal chop balancing out the razor sharp melodies riffed by the double guitars. Bits of retro occult flair blended with a bit of psychedelic stoner give this band an easy recommendation for fans ranging from Witch to Black Cowgirl. Again, keep your ears peeled. These guys have a little some’n some’n going on if you ask me.

“Really digging the heavy retro vibes these guys emit. Hard rocking solos, killer grooves, and burly vocals sounding like a John Bush/Lee Ving protege saturated with reefer smoke. Like Paul mentioned this has evolved nicely from the raw demo material also worth picking up. Deserves your attention.”

Sorry it’s been so long since my last bonanza, seems I am saying that every time as well. Anyway, enjoy and expect more of these in the future. There is an endless amount of rad tunes camping out there in bandcamp. It’s such a great platform. Download the mobile app also if you haven’t already, I use it daily for both listening to my new purchases, items added to my wishlist for evaluation and purchasing physical merchandise. That’s right; you can now purchase vinyl, CDs, and merch from the bandcamp site straight within the app itself. How convenient!!

King Bison - King Bison

Straight outta Red Hill, PA, King Bison has been around since 2012. In that time, they have released one EP and one full-length album. The latter came out in April 2015, I believe, and was the very first release by the fledgling Delaware label, Snake Charmer Coalition. And it's this particular recording I want to talk about, if you have a minute or two.

Going for the riff with a shit-ton of attitude and balls, King Bison's self-titled long player, grips you by the balls from the word go. And it won't let off until the last song, 'Space Boogie' is over and your nutsack is crushed to a bloody pulp. In between, the band pummels the listener into submission with their heavy rock, influenced by Clutch, Mountain, ZZ Top and Black Sabbath, amongst others. Lead by founder singer/guitarist Chris Wojcik, King Bison has a natural-born frontman at the helm. Besides writing badass tunes, his guitar playing is on point, as is his raspy, throaty voice.

Hell bent for leather, or something akin to it, opener 'One For The Money' goes wide fucking open in a filthy awesome Clutch kind of way. Badass riffs, pounding rhythms, and gasoline-fueled vocals lead the way. 'March Of The Sasquatch' picks up where the former left off. In classic Clutch style, King Bison boogies, slithers and weaves through a maze full of beautiful grooves and riffs. Pedal to the metal, 'Queen Of The South' is the perfect car driving, beer chugging beast that you could ever wish for. Just roll the windows down, take the top down and just roll with it! Slightly slower and bluesier, 'Pariah' is amazing! The guitar sound Chris has found is out of this world. It rips through everything with such ease while Chris’ wonderful beast-voice bellows spite and bile. 'Night Ride' picks up the pace and is kind of Southern rock at first. But once the song explodes, it rocks the fuck out and then some. Another song which is perfect for a summer’s night drive flooring it and allowing yourself to be swept away. It’s back to slow power blues with ‘I’m Gone’ with the band telling it like it is….”I’m over you and I’m gone”. Chris pulls off a great solo in the earlier parts, as well as towards the end, which adds to the liberation of the lyrics. As mentioned earlier, ‘Space Boogie’ ends this amazing album and they go full tilt to leave us listeners wanting more. Kind of reminds me of Texan maestros Mothership which is not a bad thing at all.

‘King Bison’ is a great release that really deserves much more recognition. The guys aren’t reinventing the wheel but they play with such gusto, freedom and joy which alone sets them apart from so many other bands out there. Add their no bullshit attitude to the fray and voilà, King Bison are miles ahead of the pack. So don’t be a fool and miss out on some badass, pure heavy rock’n’roll, because these Pennsylvanians will make your day so much better.

MONDO DRAG STREAM NEW ALBUM, THE OCCULTATION OF LIGHT (FEB. 26, RIDINGEASY RECORDS), VIA METAL SUCKS

TOUR DATES WITH PENTAGRAM, ROADBURN AND DESERTFEST PERFORMANCES

Mondo Drag, the Oakland band Metal Injection described as creating “soul warming psychedelic rock,” stream their new album, The Occultation of Light (Feb. 26, RidingEasy Records) via Metal Sucks (http://www.metalsucks.net/2016/02/22/exclusive-premiere-mondo-drag-the-occultation-of-light/).

“Each of our albums has directional changes in songwriting and this third chapter is no exception,” says vocalist/keyboardist John Gamino. “Since moving to Oakland, we've been privy to the large amount of music that flows through a major cultural center.  We've seen legendary acts like Magma, King Crimson, Goblin, and Yes. We are always trying to expand our sonic range and we definitely explore some new areas on the new album that we've not been to before.”

Mondo Drag launch a brief U.S. tour on March 11 in Denver, joining Pentagram for a series of both U.S. and European tour dates before teaming for a European outing with Elder as well as performances at Roadburn and Desertfest.

The once fruitful rock'n'roll city of San Francisco is now a barren womb, fraught with the lasting effects of technological herpes. Thankfully, a polyp known as BANQUET was formed and now screeching for freedom from the womb’s clutches. With dual-ripping lead guitars, howling vocals and a rhythm section that can make a pregnant woman’s water break, BANQUET are raising the flag for San Francisco's rock'n’roll. After delivering their debut 7'' last year and playing at reputed US festival Psycho California, the Californian foursome is now set to release their first full-length Jupiter Rose via Heavy Psych Sounds this February 26th.
