Thou Shall Kill – Death King Enthroned

Recently, Tomas Lindberg, vocalist for the legendary At The Gates, said this about death metal: “We eventually came to the conclusion that, to us, death metal is not an angry music style. It's really less about aggression than instilling the songs with a twisted madness powerful enough to unsettle and unnerve the listener.” I read that quote and it seemed to me as though he might have just listened to this release from Thou Shall Kill, because that whole part about twisted madness? It's all over this record.

Thou Shall Kill is most definitely an old school death metal band. I feel pretty safe in saying that you will never see any neon colors on their album covers or merch. Whether you are down with European or Floridian death metal, or any other flavor for that matter, these guys have you covered. Listening to this album is like opening the wrong door and discovering you just opened a portal to Hell, and now you're dealing with a room full of demons. This is death metal done right.

These songs are all gems of the genre. Everything is tight, very well written and performed at a high level. There are moments when the entire band is playing in unison, and doing some very cool stuff, as well as moments when it seems that insanity reigns and the listener has trouble keeping up with everything that is going on. I actually pulled out the headphones so I could really listen to how all of the instruments were working together to create this tumult and din of wickedness. If death metal is your thing you really need to hear this album. It will give you hope that there are still bands like this roaming the earth and playing in the true, old ways.

“Weapons of War” is my favorite track on this album. It is so well done, and then the guitar solo is like a fret-melting call across time and space to summon all that is unholy. I listened to it a few times and it feels like its just not right, but in a very good way. With this song playing, if I looked out my window and saw Cthulu hovering in the sky, I would not be surprised. Scared shitless, but not surprised. “Buried Beneath” is an excellent example of how this band works together. The drum fills are really cool and very unique for this style of music. One would expect blast beats and other speedy playing, but instead we get drum parts that fit absolutely perfectly with the song, and again set this band apart as one who knows what they are doing and forging their own path rather than just copying what has gone before. Just brilliant stuff.

I'm a firm believer in supporting what you love, and I heartily endorse this album. There are certainly bigger name bands playing death metal, but you'd be hard pressed to find a band anywhere that plays with a passion and fierceness that shines through like this even when you are listening to a digital file. This is a band that is fully into what they are doing and its easy to get behind that. This is what true death metal sounds like. Open your mind so that you can hear and embrace all that death metal means.

Now in their 48th year, King Crimson will be returning to America in the Fall of 2017! The new dates see the group performing in some states and cities that have not been visited in a while. Atlanta, Georgia, for example, last had live Crimson music in 2001, while Texas has experienced something of an epic Crimson drought since 1974, not counting ProjeKct Three's week-long residency in the Lone Star state during March 1999.

Tour dates:

21 Oct Music Hall, Dallas, TX
23 Oct Center Stage, Atlanta, GA
24 Oct Center Stage, Atlanta, GA
26 Oct Duke Energy Centre for the Performing Arts, Raleigh, NC
28 Oct Lisner Auditorium, Washington D.C.
29 Oct Lisner Auditorium, Washington D.C.
31 Oct New Jersey Performing Arts Centre, Newark, NJ
02 Nov Merriam Theatre, Philadelphia, PA
03 Nov Merriam Theatre, Philadelphia. PA

With three drummers up front including Pat Mastelotto, Gavin Harrison and Jeremy Stacey, as well as the return of multi-instrumentalist Bill Reiflin on keyboards, guitarist, and original founding member, Robert Fripp, states that this “double quartet formation” is likely to make more noise than ever before. Rounding out the eight piece line up are guitarist and vocalist Jakko Jakszyk, long-time bassist Tony Levin, and saxophonist Mel Collins, who was a mainstay of Crim from 1970-1972.

As well as standard tickets, the band's label, DGM, also has announced sale of VIP Royal Packages, limited to just 60 per show. Details can be viewed at the label's interactive and recently redeveloped website, www.dgmlive.com.

Here's what the press have raved about King Crimson's summer 2017 North American tour:

“On our final evening at the festival, we were witness to the concert that inevitably proved to be its highlight...The blend of mood, melody, ambiance and atmosphere dazzled the audience, which responded with frequent standing ovations.” - Lee Zimmerman, Goldmine Magazine

“Complex musical structures, the power, the intensity and the flight of guitars, flutes and especially drums, the progressive rock of King Crimson unfolded like never...With a dense and complex performance that perfectly coincided with the title of the tour entitled Radical Action, King Crimson took over all the years of his long career, offered new material and transported the music lovers to their rich universe and especially without compromise.” -  YVES LECLERC, Journal de Quebec

“Fripp and his band offered an impeccable performance in two stages. No melodies, no flapping, only musicians at the top of their art.” - IAN BUSSIÈRES La Presse, Quebec

“The band finally reaps all that it has sown in its many transformations...the company of the good old days got its money's worth! In short, the king is not dead, far from it, and they still rejoice.” - Réjean Beaucage, Voir.ca

There was an undeniable nostalgic thrill to these songs, but considering the unconventional setup and the band's longstanding aversion to living in the past, they weren't presented as museum pieces...this remained a celebration from a band that has found a way to honour the scope of its legacy without abandoning its avant-garde principles. Crimson has never sounded more complete, or more joyous, on stage than it does now.” -  Jordan Zivitz, Montreal Gazette

“The eclectic setlist covered the bands forty plus years, beginning with 1973's 'Larks' Tongues in Aspic, Part One' earmarked by one of several Mel Collins' exemplary solos, then jumped a decade later for the fluid 'Neurotica' with Fripp’s hyper-kinetic guitar riffs perched alongside a dizzying high tempo jazz beat. The uniqueness of seeing each of these seasoned musicians working is near indescribable and has to be experienced live, to fully embrace their vision - think of eight master painters working in their own style, but on a common canvas, and you begin to get the idea of things.” - We Heart Music, Minneapolis

“As part of their 17-show 'Radical Action Tour 2017,' King Crimson made a stop at the Greek Theatre for what can only be succinctly described as nearly three hours of absolute musical bliss — subtle and pastoral on one hand, a cacophony of sonic thrusts on the other.” - Shawn Perry Vintage Rock

“While their strong EP of new originals 'Heroes,' (in tribute to David Bowie) has devoted fans pleased and open-eared, it's the rarities from the back catalog that haven’t been played in decades or ever that make this tour's lineup exceptionally strong. Astounding as it was, King Crimson still has the propensity to tackle songs from all over their vast catalog, while incessantly adding new intersections and elements.” - Dylan Muhlberg, Grateful Web

In other news:

The band has recently released “The Elements Of King Crimson 2017 Tour Box.” As with previous releases in the “Elements” series, the full variety of King Crimson's music is presented over 2 CDs! Featuring extracts from rehearsals, new live recordings, elements from studio recordings, full tracks, alternate takes and finished recordings from 1969-2016, many of which make their first appearance on CD.

Every line-up is featured across the double CD set. Of particular interest on the new set is the inclusion on disc 2 of every part of “Larks' Tongues in Aspic” (some studio, some live) from “Part I” to “Level 5” – interspersed with elements taken from the original studio sessions and rehearsals.

Packaged in a DVD-sized fold out digipak style book case with a 24 page booklet including sleeve notes by co-compiler Sid Smith, photos of memorabilia, full info about the 2016 tour and a number of band and individual photos of the current band line-up.

Also, coinciding with the first leg of the tour, King Crimson released a CD EP titled “Heroes - Live In Europe, 2016.” Recorded in Berlin during the band's 2016 European tour., the EP was released on June 2nd 2017 and, along with “The Elements Of King Crimson 2017 Tour Box,” can be ordered via the shops at www.dgmlive.com as well as available through traditional retail outlets. The US based Schizoid Shop has recently added a range of new shirts and other band-related merchandise, and offers weekly specials including offers to win free tour tees. www.schizoidshop.com.

Formed in 2003, the power trio led by Stratocaster genius Parker Griggs carved their own sonic niche fusing crunching, heavy Sabbath-style chords with fiery ‘Hendrixian’ solos and a raw intensity that is addictive and captivating. Bandcamp Bonanza – Smoked Out

Scorching fires out west have been dominating the landscape, filling the air with smoke and ash in the last month or so. Bandcamp has been ablaze for other reasons. Last round I featured some of the best of bandcamp mid-year recap. This round I’m going back to showing off some of the new finds that keep the year moving in a positive direction. At some point you’d think it would start slowing down, but the music just keeps releasing and it blows my mind every time. Check out the latest batch of Bandcamp Bonanza face melters.

Second Coming of Heavy – Chapter 6: Kayleth / Favequaid
Splits seem to be gaining traction as of late. Ripple has not only taken the special edition split vinyl to the next level, they have done it with class. Look at the art package that being featured on each chapter by Ghosttown Graphics. It’s just insane and to know that the splines will create an image when stacked together at the end of the 10 chapter saga, it begs for complete discography collectors to hop aboard. Each chapter features two up and coming heavy rocking bands. Chapter 6 is on fire.
Chapter 6 brings us another round of bands with their first appearance on Ripple. This is a perfect combination of atmospheric riffs and high octane rock songs. Kayleth bring the expansive grooves straight from outer space while Favequaid deliver us an undisputed punky grit layered with tasty chops. It seems each Chapter brings a new favorite. The saga gets better and better and the artwork is intense. Cannot wait to receive my OBI vinyl edition and complete the entire set.Favorite track: Favequaid - Everytime.

Sun Rider – III
Another band with exquisite artwork in their catalog, Sun Rider bring a sludge stained stoner metal to the party with monster riffs and scarred vocal tones that combine to make a heavy blues album that comes out similar in output to the band HARK, but less progressive and more bluesy. Check out their entire discography and you’ll be considering hitting that buy button on the vinyl even though the shipping is insanely pricey.

Howling Giant – Black Hole, Space Wizard: Part 2
Now here is a band to keep your eyes on. These dudes from Nashville know how to write a great song and keep it accessible with a wide range of polish, but they also know how to maintain a heavy ass energy. I just can’t say enough good things. Each release that comes out of these guys brains is a new favorite. Part 2 is intense.
Howling Giant return with Part 2 of the BHSW saga launching rocket fueled riffs beyond the atmospheric boundary of standard hard rock fare. Astronautical fuzz echoes over metallic solos as the progressive harmonies consume by way of gravitational force. Part 2 is a gorgeous and monolithic slab of stoner metal that'll have you begging for more. Keep your eyes on these guys. They're going places.

The Last Coyote – Gunfighter Tales
I found these guys using the method of checking the bandcamp new section by genre, and randomly stumbled over these guys.
This is the kind of music I yearn for. Sifting through the bandcamp vaults today The Last Coyote makes its presence known. Gun smoking melodies crackle with bluesy strums and outlaw wales across the western prairie like a flaming ring of mountain fire.

Between the Lines – Between the Lines
This is refreshing and suffocating at the same time. There were parts that had that 15 years old nostalgia going on, yet it stands out in the field of hard rock.
The bass slaps like a sack of balls against a kilted thigh as the dark, brooding groove hymns Between the Lines of crunchy distorted rock and goth enhanced grunge. For fans of Tool and freaks alike, this debut will steamroll your expectations of an Irish rock band.

Hair of the Dog – This World Turns
Last but certainly not least Hair of the Dog came out with a new album this year. I am a huge fan of this band which required that I pre-order the vinyl to go with the first two albums I scrounged together last year. Pretty stoked on this new one, it gets better every time you play it and I find it ranking high on many year-end lists’
Hair of the Dog is the type of band you can play in the morning to ease the bangover from witnessing their show the night before. This World Turns exemplifies all that is heavy rock taking the band to future cult classic status and showing no signs of losing hide. The melodies echo lean distorted glory with progressive riffs, bar worthy balladry and intricate snarls of rock and roll fury. Can't deny this as one of the best hard rock albums of 2017. Vinyl ordered. Just look at those colors on the cover. This is the full package. Favorite track: This World Turns.

That ought to keep you busy for a bit. I’ve got more on deck for future Bonanza Bonanza features and it shows no signs of slowing down. Let it burn!
